TOYOTA RECALLS 141K PRIUS MODELS OVER DOORS THAT COULD OPEN UNEXPECTEDLY

(NewsNation) — Japanese automaker Toyota is recalling approximately 142,000 Prius vehicles due to the risk of a rear door opening while driving.

In a Jan. 28 release, the world’s largest automobile manufacturer announced that “certain circumstances can cause water to enter the electric door switches on the rear doors of the subject vehicles and cause a switch to activate.”

“If this occurs while the rear doors are unlocked, a rear door can open while driving, leading to an increased risk of injury to occupants.”

The recall applies to 141,286 vehicles, including 2023–2026 Toyota Prius models, 2025–2026 Prius Plug-In Hybrid models and 2023–2024 Prius Prime vehicles sold in the U.S., according to recall documents Toyota submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Toyota has reported no accidents related to this defect and only three warranty claims, according to NHTSA.

Owners of the affected vehicles will be notified by late March, according to the company, which also confirmed Toyota dealers will fix the problem free of charge.

To check recall information, owners can visit Toyota.com/recall or nhtsa.gov/recalls and enter their vehicle identification number (VIN) or license plate information.
