In August, South Korea's five leading automakers collectively sold over 620,000 vehicles worldwide, fueled by strong overseas demand, especially for eco-friendly hybrid models, despite ongoing U.S. tariff challenges.
On Monday, Hyundai, Kia, GM Korea, KG Mobility, and Renault Korea reported combined global sales of 626,721 units for August, marking a 1.2% increase compared to the same period last year. Domestic sales in South Korea rose 5.2% to 111,135 units, while international sales inched up 0.4% to 515,586 units. Industry analysts credit the automakers' agile response to market shifts and growing interest in hybrid vehicles for helping them weather tariff pressures.
Hyundai and Kia continued their upward momentum, driven largely by strong hybrid vehicle sales. Hyundai sold 58,330 units domestically and 278,065 units internationally. Domestic sales rose slightly by 0.4%, led by popular models like the Elantra compact sedan and Palisade SUV. Overseas sales increased by 0.5%. Notably, Hyundai's hybrid and electric vehicle sales jumped 8.8% and 16.3%, respectively.
Kia posted total sales of 263,950 units, a 0.8% gain, bolstered by the popularity of SUVs such as the Sportage and Seltos. Domestic sales climbed 7.4% to 43,675 units, although overseas sales dipped slightly by 0.5% to 210,275 units.
GM Korea saw a 34.7% surge in sales to 21,059 units, largely due to a low sales baseline last August caused by a strike. However, its domestic sales continued to face challenges, dropping 25.2% to just 1,207 units. KG Mobility posted a solid 9% increase in sales, hitting 8,128 units thanks to new offerings like the Actyon Hybrid and Musso EV. Conversely, Renault Korea's sales fell 23.6% to 6,457 units.
The Hyundai Elantra was the best-selling model in South Korea last month, with 7,655 units sold. This marks the first time in a year that a sedan topped the sales charts, the last being the Sonata in August of the previous year with 6,317 units sold.
