3.5 MILLION BMWS LATER—CHINA’S EV FRENZY IS STILL IN THE DRIVER’S SEAT

BMW Brilliance Automotive Ltd. (BBA), a joint venture between the BMW Group and Brilliance Auto, has reached a significant milestone at its Dadong plant in Shenyang, China, by surpassing 3.5 million cumulative production units. Established in 2003 as BMW's first production base in China, this facility has become the cornerstone of the company's operations in the country.

Of the 3.5 million vehicles produced at this facility, the 5 Series makes up an impressive 2 million units, making it the highest-volume model. Several versions of the 5 Series have gained prominence, with the long-wheelbase variant drawing significant attention. Another standout is the uniquely named and colored Black Warrior 5 Series, which has gained immense popularity.

The BMW Group places a high value on the plant's capabilities. Thomas Michel, BBA's plant manager, stated that they have fulfilled their core mission of delivering flawless products. He emphasized that the plant's advanced digitization distinguishes it, enabling enhanced performance through a unique AI-based production system dubbed the factory nervous system.

A key component of this system is the visual inspection platform AIQX (AI Quality Next), which is deployed across more than 30 production stations. AIQX utilizes high-resolution cameras to capture critical manufacturing steps in real-time. A cloud-based AI algorithm then detects potential defects and provides immediate feedback, allowing for precise monitoring from order generation to final vehicle assembly.

In 2024, BBA's sales in China totaled 603,800 units, marking a 15% decrease from the previous year. Exports also declined, falling by 37.3% to 21,300 units. These figures underscore the dual challenges facing the automotive industry: intensifying competition in the electric vehicle market and a shrinking demand for internal combustion engine vehicles.
