When buying a new car, you first want to know if it is reliable. Real human experience can give you valuable insight into what to expect. Like every other year, Consumer Reports has issued a list of the most reliable electric cars, and, the list has changed a lot compared to the previous year. In a way, though, that is to be expected because as EVs age, consumers will have a little more experience with their vehicles. If any problems come to the surface, that is when it will show up. As the old saying goes, "Time will tell," and in this case, it most certainly will.
In theory, electric vehicles should be much more reliable because they are missing many problematic parts associated with ICE-powered vehicles, like the transmission, ignition, fuel systems, valvetrains, and exhaust system, among many other things. In reality, however, EVs have just as many, if not more, problems than gasoline-powered or hybrid models. Owners of electric cars have reported issues with the battery packs, charging, electric drive motors, and heating and cooling systems. Here's a list of 20 electric vehicles ranked by Consumer Reports according to the issues reported by owners.
To ensure our readers have access to the most up-to-date information, this article on the most reliable electric vehicles (EVs) has been comprehensively revised for 2024. This update reflects Consumer Reports' latest ratings. While some vehicles were rated higher by Consumer Reports, complete tests had not been conducted, so they were excluded.
In order to give you the most up-to-date and accurate information possible, the data used to compile this article was sourced from various manufacturers and other reliable sources such as Consumer Reports.
Hear me out on this one... BMW might have nailed the electrified SUV the first time. When the XM is just too much, don't forget about BMW's own IX.

Just like the midsize SUV and crossover market, this segment is just as competitive for the electric SUV market. This is aided by the superb build quality and comfortable ride of the iX.
Another impressive aspect is the performance of this SUV. This may be a luxury SUV but it is still a fast car, switch to sport mode and it delivers super quick acceleration. Road noise is said to be very non-existent but wind noise is audible at high speeds, this is due to the absence of a combustion engine. There are also a lot of tech features in this vehicle and you have the option to have the car completely silent or play with some composed noise to match the vehicle's speed.

Though a little short on driving range, the GV60 is where concept car styling meets high performance in an electrically charged luxury car
It wasn't long ago Genesis was being praised for its top-notch luxury cars that are on par with some of the best German counterparts. The GV60 seeks to continue that trend in the midsize electric luxury space. It receives an overall score of 75/100 and ranks behind the brilliant BMW iX at #2 out of 10 luxury SUVs tested. It also beats out its larger mate the GV70 which ranks at #7. This is quite an impressive feat as it beats out a lot of worthy rivals from Audi and Mercedes.
It receives high praise as being one of the nicest electric vehicles to drive with dynamic handling and quick acceleration. The interior was nice but not as high-end as well-known Genesis models but this was acceptable for the price point. While it has many gimmicks, people appreciate the fact that an audible voice would let you know when the car is charging. This is great since you don't have to move back and forth to make sure the car is charging. The overall ride comfort was a bit firm but not uncomfortable in any way.

The drawbacks with the GV60 start with the touch-sensitive buttons which make them hard to use and sometimes are activated accidentally. This forces the driver to make use of the touchscreen a little more than expected. Next is compromised seat space, especially with rear seat headroom, but most SUVs with this design tend to have this problem.
Tesla's best-selling model is sure to make it on almost any EV list, and it ranks #4 out of 10 tested in the electric luxury SUV segment. This is essentially an SUV version of the beloved Model 3, so you get more usability and practicality than the sedan. Its minimal interior makes it one of the cleanest interior spaces in the automotive industry.
Tesla has nailed the charging infrastructure and unless a charger is having issues, you're always going to be able to charge the Model Y at any available supercharger. Since it is based on the Model 3, the handling is said to be firm and sports car-like, which may inspire confidence in drivers but bad in certain situations, The driver assistance system is also the best among any automotive manufacturer.

The main complaint here is a stiff ride similar to the Model 3. While the cabin is quiet, the occasional thump of the suspension can come into the cabin distorting the serene experience. The controls are difficult to use and everything is buried under menus. There were also complaints of no real blind spot warning and a lack of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, you have to make do with what Tesla has provided. You also have to deal with panel gaps that are quite obvious on some Tesla vehicles.
The Q4 E-Tron is #6 out of 10 electric luxury SUVs and slots just under the larger Q8 E-tron which took the #5 spot. It shares the same platform as the Volkswagen ID.4, but Audi made sure the Q4 E-Tron felt and drove supremely better than that car. But the steering response is normal and not as sharp as some vehicles here. However, its power delivery was smooth and effortless.
The cabin was impressively quiet even by EV standards, it was described to be super-silent inside. The ride is firm but smooth and composed and there are no unwanted noises. The cabin quality is just as expected from any Audi with proper layout and placement of controls making them easy to use.

The recall involves a faulty fuse that "could lead to a sudden loss of power or critical safety functions," increasing the risk of a crash or injury. Since Consumer Reports gathers reliability information through owner surveys, they are unable to provide detailed data for the 2024 Mercedes-Benz EQE . Their surveys require a minimum of 200-400 responses per model year to ensure statistically significant results. As the EQE is a new model, it hasn't yet received enough surveys from owners to provide reliable data on its performance.
Consumer Reports positions the 2024 Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV as the top contender in the very limited segment of three-row electric SUVs with an overall score of 58. The EQS SUV boasts several strengths. It delivers a luxurious driving experience with impressive acceleration, a quiet cabin, and comfortable seating, especially for passengers in the first two rows. The optional third-row seating offers additional versatility, which is a rarity among electric SUVs.

One of the key concerns is the driving experience. The brakes offered a spongy feel, and the confusing controls did no favor either. Similar to the 2024 Mercedes-Benz EQE, this EV also lacks sufficient data to provide detailed reliability information.
The 2024 Volkswagen ID.4 came seventh place out of seven electric SUVs CR tested. The ID.4 received an overall score of 57 out of 100. The ID.4 offers some positive attributes, like a pleasant driving experience with good acceleration, a quiet cabin, and a roomy interior for its size. It also offers a good bang for your buck. Notably, the all-wheel-drive ID.4 boasts an EPA-estimated driving range of 263 miles for 2024, making it a compelling option for many drivers.

A major point of criticism is the unintuitive control system, which detracts from the overall experience. Additionally, the brake pedal feel is considered below average.
The Rivian R1S is simply an SUV version of the Rivian R1T which is a truck, and it has carried those characteristics into the SUV. It ranked #4 out of 4 electric three-row SUVs tested so far and it might not hold that position for long when other SUVs get tested. Its average overall score of 52/100 is lower than the R1T which scored 58/100.
However, The R1S does benefit from ample interior space and cargo room due to its boxy design that helps maximize every available space. Every surface and material also had an expensive and quality feel to them which was welcome for an SUV like this. The biggest wow factor about the R1S is its speed; it has that in loads and can only be beaten by the very best from Tesla.

It is quiet by most car standards but is the noisiest EV they've ever tested. Noises range from the electric motor whine to suspension shudders and wind noise above 60 mph. The ride is too stiff, which gives great handling at the expense of a harsh ride.
The interior controls are unintuitive, which sometimes means you're spending an awful amount of time on the infotainment screen. This takes your eyes off the road and can be dangerous in any situation except when parked. It may be great as a truck, but it doesn't work as well in SUV form.
